A week after the tragedy in Nice on Bastille Day and I am still stunned....
It was only 2 years ago that Peter and I walked up and down the impressive Promenade des Anglais of Nice, sharing the pavement with joggers, rollerbladers and stylish assorted locals with pampered pets. A mere block back from the promenade was the Cours Saleya, an antiques market that we explored at our leisure. While investigating the character filled streets and lane ways of ‘Old Nice’, we discovered plazas, churches, boutiques and historic buildings aplenty. And with the aid of our trusty map, we clumsily found the steep steps that took us to Colline du Chateau, home to ancient Roman ruins, waterfall, multi-faith cemetery and, ultimately, the most breathtaking vista over Nice and the French Riviera. It’s been hard to visualize this carefree and sunny corner of the world as the scene of such carnage and devastation.
While I can understand travelers calling a halt to their travel plans as a result of this violence, we willingly hand our power over to terror if we allow this cowardly act to curtail our plans. I say, let us continue to enjoy France and all that her magnificent culture has to offer.
