Top 10 Best Views in Australia

The Aussie Icons - Outback and Reef Star Attractions Shine for Travellers.

Australia's best-selling travel magazine, Australian Traveller, has found some hidden gems among the Aussie icons to make up the 100 Best Views in Australia - the main feature in a special collectors' edition of the magazine, on sale April 4.

While the iconic Great Barrier Reef, and Hardy Reef in particular, took out the top spot, several barely known and isolated destinations ranked within the Top 10.

A tiny abandoned homestead on the outskirts of Burra in Outback SA took out the second gong, while the virtually unknown West Island in the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, an Australian Territory, took tenth position (14 places ahead of Uluru!).

"The list illuminates the phenomenal range of world-class sights and sensory experiences this country has to offer. It outlines the journeys we should all make at least once in a lifetime," says Australian Traveller Managing Editor Quentin Long.

"We tell our readers how to get to each location and encounter the jaw-dropping views, what to expect there and what they can do - plus which seasons and even times of day to experience them at their absolute best," Long continues.

The Top 100 was determined by a panel of nine respected Australian photographers who have viewed extensive mileage of the diverse Australian landscape through their collective lenses - Ken Duncan (Australia's most prolific landscape photographer); Chris Bray (award-winningAustralian Geographic photographer); Grenville Turner; Gordon Undy; Nick Rains; Mark Gray; Nicholas Watt; Tim Bauer; and Peter Lik.

They ranked over 1000 favourite "best view" entries from the magazine's readers, tourism operators and local and international travellers, in turn providing their own winning shots of the locations listed.
